Your workout isn’t just about how far you run or how fast you bike. Before stepping a foot on the trail or getting on a bike, you take the time to prepare for a workout by hydrating and stretching – then, once your workout is over, you cool down, stretch again and replenish your now spent muscles. The sports nutrition industry wants you to buy their powders, pills, drinks, gels, bars, gum and even jelly beans to help you perform your best. You’re getting all the vitamins and nutrients you need to stay fit from that stuff but you could be getting those same vitamins and nutrients from a more wholesome source. What you eat can be just as good if not better for your body than that recovery drink.
Make your diet work just as hard as you do with meals filled with protein and nutrients to keep you healthy and provide the energy you need for your next workout. Our southwestern bean dip recipe is a protein packed snack that’s satisfying and healthy. The fully cooked beans and guacamole in this recipe provide a big dose of the nutrients your body needs to bounce back after a hard workout. Like beans, avocados are a source of fiber and potassium which your body needs to refuel and re-energize. You can use your own guacamole recipe or favorite store-bought brand along with your go-to taco seasoning to personalize the recipe. It makes a great dip with baked pita chips or as a filling for quesadillas.
